Part of a studio based project, this was shot in my studio, using a controlled fog set up. IT consisted of several shoot with several different models to create a series entitle "Shadow and Fog".Time
This particular shot was taken in the lase afternoon of my final session in this series.Lighting
The lighting for this consisted of a three light set up including an overhead striplight, and two softboxes postioned camera right and left.Equipment
This was on of the more technical set ups I've used in a while. For camera and lens I went with a handheld Canon 7D, with a 70-200 F4 L lens. The lighting was a two light, split light, with overhead kicker. The difficult technical aspects in this photo was creating and controlling the fog. To crate the cloud like base fog, I used a self-formulated fog liquid in my standard fog machine, pumped the fog through a DIY dry ice fog chiller, into a 12 foot by 12 foot eight inch tall containment box in which the model was placed and posed. The main difficulty was keep the fog at ground level and then gently convincing the fog, using paddles and hand fans, to move where I wanted it. One aspect of the fog was not initially expected, but proved to be a game changer was the fact that once the chilled made contact with the model's warm skin it started to rise on its own, producing that ethereal look in the background.Inspiration
This was part of a studio project entitle "Shadows and Fog". That series is an homage to women who have had to continually fight with oppression and marginalization. The ancient Greeks referred to the human soul and spirit as a shadow, while fog is often considered to be a veil, confusing and oppressive. Hence the meaning "Shadow" - the human soul, in this case women's, and "Fog", - forced veiled and oppressed. The entire series shows women oppressed by the fog, awakening in the fog, and rising above the fog; a metaphor for women's fight for true equality.Editing
With the exception of the black and white conversion, some slight imperfection correction (spot touch ups) and slight contrast boost, what you see is what was captured. The fog is real, and not a post process application. In my camera bag
It depends in what my shooting goal is. If my goal is to shoot shoot digitally, then I typically carry a 5D MkIII, a 7D, coupled with 24-70, 70-200 L series lenses. If my goal is to shoot film, which I still do, then you'll find a vintage Canon f1n 35mm, along with a Mamiya RB67 120mm, and an antique Graflex Speed Miniature Graphic in 120mm.Feedback
To capture something similar, one will need a containment box for the fog. we tried using an open studio floor but the fog dissipated far to quickly. You will also need to work in sets and quickly as the fog will eventually rise, dissipate and cloud the entire studio. When that happens, the only recourse is to stop shooting, clear the room, reset everything, and start again.
