A large, extremely slim wader; wader; black above, white below. Note the grotesquely long red legs, needlelike bill. In flight it has black unpatterned wings, which contrast with the white rump, tail, and underparts. Voice; A sharp yipping Kyip, Kyip, Kyip. Range; W. and se. US. to Peru. Winters mainly south of U.S. Habitat: Grassy marshes, mud flats, pools, shallow lakes (fresh or alkaline)
