Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my parent's farm in rural South Dakota. I wanted to try night photography for the first time and the farm has many fun things to use as subjects!

Time

Since I am a student photographer and am still learning about night photography, I took this picture without really thinking much about the time or day. I just remember waiting until it got dark out, hoping that the sky would be clear that night so I could capture the stars. As soon as it got dark, I forced myself to go out into the cold November night and at least capture a single star.

Lighting

When I went out to the car that night, I didn't realize that the yard light could be seen so easily from there. I brought a flash light, but it wasn't needed. The light was the perfect amount for the shot. Unfortunately after taking the shot, the color green was the dominant color seen throughout. Ultimately, that's why I went with the black and white image.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5100, a 18-55mm lens, and a small tripod that I learned how to use that night.

Inspiration

I was inspired (and still am) by old antique items. Since I wanted to take a night picture, I figured that this old car would be the perfect subject. I went out with no expectations and through all the trial and error that night, I got something I can be proud of.

Editing

With the yard light lighting my subject, it created a green hue throughout the image. I am a student photographer and didn't really understand color balance at the time. I ended up converting the image to black and white and increased the contrast and clarity to help dramatize the image.

In my camera bag

Let's just say, my bag is always stuffed full. When I go out anywhere, I bring my Nikon D5100. I feel like if I don't bring it once, I will miss an opportunity for an amazing shot. I always have my 18-55mm lens attached to it. I also bring my 55-300mm lens just to make sure I have most of my distances covered. I have my ancient off camera flash from my photography professor along, too. I never know when I need a Go Pro and always make sure to have that in my bag. Lastly, all the essentials like SD cards and back up batteries to make sure I am never without memory or battery power!

Feedback

When capturing something like the Black Hills in South Dakota or an old car, unique angles and patience is key. When taking a picture, try getting at a higher or lower angle than eye level. People always see things at eye level, which make similar pictures seem repetitive. Also, don't be afraid to wait awhile to get the best lighting or clouds. Those who are patient when shooting are more likely to get those spectacular shots that you envy.
