Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Jagdschloß (Hunting lodge) Granitz on the island of Rügen, Germany.

Time

The photo was taken at about 1pm in August. We just had arrived via a steam train at the lodge.

Lighting

As the view had a big contrast between the lower stairs in the shadow and the top level stairs which were lighted by the windows, I took an exposure bracket, so I could blend them into an HDR picture.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D700 and the 16-35/f4.0 lens at 16mm for this shot, no tripod or flash. The stairs were opened for a batch of people than closed again, so the stairs and the tower would not be overcrowded. I just had to wait until one group was at the top, to get an empty staircase.

Inspiration

I'm not the first one to capture this picture. When I looked at other pictures from this location, this is one of the more iconic views, so already knew it would be worthwile to look straight up.

Editing

Due to the contrast, I took several pictures which I combined into an HDR picture.

In my camera bag

At that time I had a Nikon D700 with several big lenses. As the equipment became to heavy for my taste, I switch to the Micro Four Thirds system. Nowadays I use an Olympus E-M1 Mk II with several lenses, depending on what I want to shoot.

Feedback

Especially on travels where you have not much time, it is important to investigate in advance to find interesting angles, hints on the best time of day etc.
