Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of my daughter was taken in our backyard shed. We had just moved into the house and we were busy unpacking.

Time

This was taken on August 13, 2014 in the late afternoon. A storm was rolling in, I was unpacking some items in the shed and my children were running around in the backyard.

Lighting

When I took this picture, the sun kept disappearing behind the clouds so I did not have to worry about the harsh sun and shades in the afternoon. I also used the shed to my advantage and I positioned her to stand right in front of the shed's door.

Equipment

This was shot with the Canon 6D and the sigma 35 1.4 ART

Inspiration

I love to capture the small things in our crazy life, the things that sometimes go unnoticed, the things that I want to be able to remember. I noticed how her hair was blowing in the wind and I wanted to capture that moment, because we was about to turn six and I had just promised her that she could cut her hair for the first time.

Editing

When I took this photo I knew right away that I intended to convert it to black and white. Between her white shirt, the darkness of the shed, the wind in her sun bleached her, I knew it needed to be in black and white to add more contrast. I felt it also felt like it also added to the drama of a storm coming in.

In my camera bag

I am very simple. In my camera bag (or purse for that matter) is my Canon 6d with my sigma 35 ART attached, a lens cleaning pen, and extra memory cards- that is it.

Feedback

Photography to me has not been a means of making money or gaining fame but a way for me as a mother to document the small moments of our lives that truly are our family's pure simple joys. My advice for ours is to remember why you love photography, find your joy and capture it. I would also add to never compare your work to others :)
