Location
Tidal River, Wilsons Promontory National Park, Victoria Australia. 'The Prom' as most people call it is the favorite destination for Victorians and attracts people from around the world.Time
I have visited the Prom many times. I am aware that in the mornings and afternoon the low angle of the light and the dark tannin stained water combines to create great lighting, specularity, and reflections. This shot was taken at 9:45 am just before the special light disappeared.Lighting
I started shooting much earlier but I stuck around for these shots. The light 'disappeared' not long after. Don't walk away too early!Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II 100-400 Mark 11Inspiration
The birds come to the shallow calm water to bathe, & preen in the morning and afternoon. Photo opportunities abound. Lighting, splashes, reflections, and postures begged to be photographed.Editing
This shot took very little additional post-processing. I apply a preset to all my photographs on import into Lightroom. Whites +11 Blacks -5 Clarity +20 Sharpening 41 Masking 84 and some noise reduction. I also apply the default camera & lens profile corrections. These presets were established to enhance photo prints but look great on the screen as well.In my camera bag
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon 7D, 100-400 Mark 11, Canon 7D and 24-105 Tripod with a screw off monopod leg. Rarely used Polaroid and Variable ND filters On my travels, I take a laptop and two portable hard drives for storage. 3G card reader, 3G hub. Chargers and spare batteries & cardsFeedback
Get to know the habits of the wildlife, the environment and when the optimum lighting occurs. This makes getting great shots much easier. When the action starts remember to zoom back to capture the reflections and splashes!
