Whilst the overwhelming majority of my shots are taken in the wild this photograph was taken in the Melbourne Zoo. Melbourne Zoo is one of the worlds best for its treatment of the creatures. My zoo encounters was one of the catalysts for traveling to Africa to see them in the wild and my ongoing passionate environmental activism.Time

As the light was high in the sky it enhanced the face with deep shade around the eyes and under the chin with high contrast with areas catching the sun. In my opinion, it made this gorilla shot even more powerful.Equipment

I am a Wildlife Artist and Photographer I chose the 7D for the extra magnification on the crop sensor. My carry on camera bag for travels weighs 14kg. Zoos offer opportunities to photograph exotic wildlife without the traveling overseas. It can be difficult to capture the wildness of captive creatures. Bored and disinterested creatures don't make good subjects for photography. Good observation and being quick on the shutter can produce great images. The condition of animals in the wild contrasts markedly to animals in captivity.
