Behind The Lens
Location
I took this up in Algonquin Park Canada, at a boys camp named Camp Pathfinder that I went to when I was younger. The camp was celebrating it's 100th anniversary a couple of years ago, which allowed me to head up and get some great pictures.Time
I had gotten up early to get some sunrise pictures. It was a beautiful morning, the air was fresh and clean and the was calm. I found my way down to the boat dock right as the sun was coming above the trees.Lighting
With the way the fog and clouds were that morning the sunlight had a amazing golden glow. It was a breathtaking site.Equipment
I took this picture with a Canon Rebel XS with an 18-55 lens, no other equipment was used.Inspiration
I was hoping to get some great morning pictures while I was surrounded by the beautiful scenery. I have always been partial to water front landscapes so I went down to the docks to see how things looked. When I got down there I saw the sun in the right spot with the dock so I started taking pictures making adjustments as needed, and this is the best that I took in that spot that morning.Editing
I did some basic touch ups to this picture in post-processing. I played with the exposure a little, I tweaked the highlights and shadows some, as well as got certain colors to pop more then others. In my camera bag
The fist thing in my camera bag is obviously my camera body which is a Canon 60D. I also normally carry my 18-135 mm, 18-55 mm, and my 55-250 mm lens (you don't know what you will need when you are out shooting). I tend to carry my Canon Speedlite 430EX II flash even though I don't use it that much. My bag is also home to a lot of odds and ends equipment like my remote shutter release, some filters, and a lens cleaning brush. I believe it is important to carry a small notebook and pencil with you when ever you are out. Never know when an idea for a shoot will hit you, if you don't write it down you will most likely forget.Feedback
You should have a rough idea on what you are looking for (place, how the sun might look). Now this is a rough idea because you are going to need to be flexible. You might need to move and come at it from a different angle then you thought because the sun is blocked by something or you are unable to get to the location you want. This is OK, you make your adjustments and keep going. Part of capturing something like this is timing: right place right time. Something to remember is that if you don't get the picture you are looking for don't stop shooting. I don't know how many times I was unable to get the look I was going for in a picture and then decided to try some other stuff well I was out and had those become some of my favorite pictures for that day.
