I deliberately used panning to allow me to get the subject relatively sharp, and blur the background. This adds a sense of speed and works particularly well when the background is unattractive or distracting. The basics behind panning is I choose a slow shutter speed, and move my camera to follow the subject. Just like in golf, follow through is the key. I pointed the camera towards the approaching subject, shoot and follow it as it move through my field of view, and keep following the motion even after I've stopped shooting.
