This was a morning shoot with our local Photo Club down at Pirt Bruce on Lake Erie Ontario Canada. I decided to go early so I could catch the sunrise but after looking back through my photos, my favourite shot was this one. It is actually about 15-30 minutes after sunrise. The sun was high enough that I captured the reflection of light off the ice. I feel it makes the photo much more dramatic.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken down at Port Bruce Ontario Canada. Port Bruce is located on the north side of Lake Erie approximately in the middle of the lake West to East.

Time

I got out of bed around 5:30 a.m. because I really wanted to get down to the pier before sunrise. We made a couple stops along the shoreline on our way there and took advantage of some blue hour. We arrived at the pier around 6:30 a.m. and set up for the sunrise. This photo was captured exactly at 7:00.06. (I had to look that up in the metadata as I didn't believe it was right on the hour like that).

Lighting

To be honest I actually missed the cresting of the sun over the horizon as I made the decision to switch lens' to get a little more reach out to the edge of the ice. I thought I missed the best light for the morning but as I took a few shots, I was noticing that the ice had a bit of a dull look to it. I figured if I waited for the sun to get a little higher in the sky I might get a reflection off the ice and create this beautiful symmetry to the image.

Equipment

My equipment used consisted of a Manfrotto tripod which held my Nikon d750. I started the morning with my 24-70mm f2.8 but then switched to my 70-200mm f2.8. to get more reach out to the edge of the ice where it met the water.

Inspiration

This was a location shoot with our local Photo club which gets out every Sunday morning or Saturday night. I have two young children so getting up early is normal for me but being able to get out of the house on time for a sun rise is a challenge. I had the plans to get out early since I hadn't made it out for any of the sunrise shoots lately.

Editing

All the post processing was done in Adobe Lightroom cc. I shoot all my images in RAW, therefore editing is required for all my images. I always start my edit process from the top of the menu to the bottom. I find it flows very well for my taste. Looking back at the lightroom data, it looks like I made a little exposure adjustment along with contrast. I went to the Blacks slider and brought it down a little to add more contrast again. Next was an adjustment to the clarity slider which I like to do with all my landscape photos. Further down the menu I made adjustments to the Red, Orange, Yellow, Purple and Magenta sliders. A little bit of sharpening and viola!

In my camera bag

I normally always carry my d750, my 24-70 f2.8 and my 70-200mm f2.8. I keep my 50mm f1.8 and 2x converter in it as well. A few extras that I prefer to leave in it are my Polarizing filter and My Neutral Density filter. One of my Speed lights will normally always be in the bag along with a couple flashlights, extra batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

The biggest advice I would say for this image, is Patience. Be patient, take a couple photos and then look at them to see if they are "the One". Critique the image while you are on site. If it is "the One", Then come up with a different angle and take some more. :)
