Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of my cat, Lord Purrkins Boddington III, while I was relaxing on my couch in my condo. I was playing around with settings on my camera and I think the strap caught his attention.

Time

This was taken in the evening, mid-April, after coming home from work.

Lighting

My condo faces east, but also faces other condos so I get a lot of reflected sunset light and colour. I also have Philips Hue lights, which are LED lights that can emit almost any colour. I usually have them set to a nice warm yellow to match incandescents.

Equipment

I shot this with my new Olympus PEN-F, still only a couple weeks old at this point, with an Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm / 1.8, handheld.

Inspiration

After the first few days with the PEN-F I just loved how great the monochrome mode photos came out and my cat is such a handsome black and white cat, he was an obvious subject!

Editing

The PEN-F's monochrome mode (profile 2) has such a great tonal range, mimicking silver film, I find that I am so happy with the capture that I hardly ever do any post-processing. I almost shoot exclusively in that mode now. But, if I ever do any post-processing, it is usually to add some additional contrast and / or cropping for composition.

In my camera bag

I like to pack light. I carry the PEN-F, usually with the M.Zuiko 17mm / 1.8 attached (which is a great snapshot / street photography lens), the 45mm (great for portraits), the little external flash that came with the camera (it articulates and looks great / proportional) and an extra battery.

Feedback

If you have a pet (especially one with a lot of character) you should keep your camera ready when you are just hanging out. Even when you are not trying to entice them to pose for a photo, their natural behaviour when you aren't paying attention to them will probably make a great shot.
