Love those colors. I think my favorite part is him clinging to the mushroom. I really love that. Oddly enough thats where my eye first went.

Behind The Lens

Location
I found this frog in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica.
Time
Late-Afternoon
Lighting
The lighting in Costa Rica can be difficult...when you're in the rainforest it can be dark because of the dense cover and the sun peeking through can create exposure issues and contrasty light. Using a flashlight to even out the exposure helps or a ring-flash on a very low setting.
Equipment
Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 100mm Macro, Gitzo Tripod, Kirk ballhead, Canon 430 EX flash.
Inspiration
I was photographing this frog when a bird stole my attention for a few moments. Next thing I knew my friend who is a local told me to forget about the bird and turn around...and this is what I saw. The Red-Eyed Tree Frog had moved onto a fallen piece of wood and was gripping the Wine Glass Mushroom that was growing from it. It was such a quick moment that I thought I had missed it but after reviewing my images from the day I was thrilled to discover I had one where his foot was tightly wrapped around the fungus.
Editing
Only basic levels adjustments and selective sharpening of the eyes.
In my camera bag
I change around my equipment depending on the type of shooting that I plan on doing...however I almost always have my Canon 500mm in my bag and at least two bodies. Currently those would be the Canon 1DX and 1DX Mark II. I also usually carry the (all Canon) 100mm Macro, 17-40mm, 100-400mm Version II, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, 1.4 Extender. Other important items would include Sandisk SD, CF and CFast Cards. Extra batteries, better beamer, flash, Singh-Ray Filters, remote shutter release, rain gear for me and the gear and ALWAYS duct tape! Just in case - you never know when you'll need it.
Feedback
Be prepared for lots of action in this location. When in Costa Rica I always have my 500mm on one camera and my macro on the other which paid off for this photo...if I'd only had one camera ready to go this frog would have moved before I was able to change my lens or get my settings correct on the camera with the macro lens.
