I took this image in Atlantic City at the cheerleading competition Battle on the Boardwalk.Time
I took this image around noon, just before I went to compete with my team. When going to cheerleading competitions I often bring my cameras with me and shoot other teams while I'm not competing.Lighting
When taking this image I really learned how to deal with bright stage lighting. I had a realization that it is much better to shoot from the side of the matt, rather than head on where the lights are so bright they wash everything out.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3300 and my favorite telephoto lens.Inspiration
Nothing really inspired me to take this specific image. I just shoot whenever I get the chance. I often get that great opportunity at cheerleading competitions.Editing
I just threw the image into camera raw and adjusted some of the lighting but other than that I didn't do much in post.In my camera bag
I have everything in my bag! I'm one of those people who always has to be prepared. I have my two Nikon camera bodies, my telephoto lens, my wide angle else, macro lens, and my standard lens. I also keep my tripod on me.Feedback
Just keep shooting. Most of the images I capture are out of pure luck. Timing is key with action shots too, you need to have rapid fire shooting on at all times and just keep shooting away. I used to use action mode a lot but recently realized that manual settings are easier to control the results of my images. If you use manual make sure you have a high shutter speed, and a wide aperture, you'll need to balance out the shutter speed with the aperture so your image isn't solid black or solid white. Stage lighting is tricky, especially with action sports. Depending on the equipment, lighting placement and sport you just need to play around and figure out what works for you and just keep shooting.
