Behind The Lens

Location

The photo seen here is in mid-town Toronto and the trail (belt line) seen here is part of what was once a passenger rail line during the late 1890's which circled part of a much younger city (and smaller) Toronto.

Time

If memory serves me correctly, the photo was taken around mid-day in March 2016. I do recall though, it was well after sunrise because I was photographing other parts of the neighbourhood and because of the snow on the ground, the sun in the grey sky and the temperature about 4 degrees celsius causing steam to rise from the snow covered landscape.

Lighting

For the most part, the majority of my photos depend on natural light. Very few photos I captured have used very little artificial light. In The Lonely Man photo for example, the natural light was my friend. The ISO and shutter speed were extremely critical to me capturing the photo as seen here. Natural light, even during a cloudy or overcast day, can be a great asset to you, but of course, this depends on what you envisioned to have captured.

Equipment

My Canon Camera is a T3i. I have been satisfied with my camera and the functions it has available. Still, there have been custom functions I am learning to use. In this particular photo, my camera was hand held and the lens used was an EFS 18-55.

Inspiration

I love certain landscapes even in the simplicity of it. The landscape of trees along with the snow on the ground, bench in the frame and the man (who was actually out walking his dog (out of frame) ) and the grayness of the of the sky seemed all to perfect not to miss capturing this image. I love this photo for the Gothic like aspect it. It just seems so......Gothic.

Editing

No post processing was done on the photo.

In my camera bag

The only pieces of equipment I own and carry in my camera bag is: camera, an 18-135mm and a 75-300mm lenses and an external flash.

Feedback

My advice to you is simple: learn from other photographers and develop your own style of photography. Think outside of the box when composing your photo. Think of a famous known landmark. How many times has the landmark been photographed in the same or similar angle? Well, my suggestion is this: how unique and awesome would the image be if another object in a subtle manner, acted as an enhancer, and used in the same picture frame as your famous landmark? Try it. You won't know until you try.
