The newly built 1 World Trade Center in New York City
See all

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a recent trip to New York City with my son's high school choir. I have been doing photography and videography since I was a teenage girl and I love it SO much! It's amazing to be able to show people my point of view of life all around us!!

Time

The Freedom Tower or World Trade Center 1 was on our itinerary for around 10:30 or 11am. I couldn't resist taking this picture and being in awe of the moment

Lighting

The sun was shining through the clouds so beautifully and everything was reflecting off the tower. This is actually all natural sunlight, with no flash used... mostly because it was the middle of the day.

Equipment

I used my Canon T3i, with an 18mm-55mm kit lens.

Inspiration

I think the biggest thing that inspired me to take this picture was the memories that I have of 9/11 itself. I knew that I'd probably never be able to come back to New York because of financial circumstances for us and that this was a once-in-a-lifetime photo op. Once I walked on the grounds of this amazing building, I was overcome with emotions and broke down crying. It was an incredible sight! And when you walk in to the museum itself, with all the relics from that fateful day, you can hear a PIN drop!! #NeverForget

Editing

The only thing I did in post-processing this image was export it and put my name on it.

In my camera bag

I bought a Canon T3i DSLR camera about 3 years ago. It pretty much never leaves my side. I have a couple of other lenses that are very useful in my bag. One is a 70-200mm F2.8, another one is 55-250mm. I carry a tripod along for shots that I need to be absolutely steady on, but I usually end up keeping it to the side because I used my camera so much. I've gotten used to it!

Feedback

I made sure that I had the widest lens along to be able to capture something like this. That was my 18-55mm. This shot will probably be able to be taken before 7pm, I would say. Probably not any later than that.
