Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on a short break in the Yorkshire Dales. My wife and I had visited several areas of the dales and we often passed Ingleborough, one of the three peaks of Yorkshire. We decided to spend one morning roaming the foothills of Ingleborough which is the hill shown in the photo.

Time

The photo was taken mid morning in August.

Lighting

It was a fine day with light clouds being blown across the sky from the west and making areas of light and shade on the hillsides. I was also drawn to the shapes of the shadows from the various gates and dry stone walls

Equipment

Taken with an Olympus OM-D EM-5 and a Panasonic Lumix 14-140 lens. Hand held and set manually to 1/125 at f/16, ISO 200.

Inspiration

The area at the foot of Ingleborough is well known for its limestone scars and I had gone out with the intention of capturing those but walking round the quality of the light and the mass of the hill attracted my attention. I found the gateway and thought the dry stone wall and the shadows gave a sense of scale and direction.

Editing

As with the majority of my photos I cropped the image and then adjusted the contrast and detail.

In my camera bag

When I am out walking I find the OM-D and the Lumix 14-140 combination very handy. Relatively light and not too large but with bags of quality.

Feedback

I always try to remember to ask myself why I am drawn to a particular view and select a viewpoint and settings that emphasize that aspect.
