The photo was taken from the bay window of my breakfast nook at my home in Sanford, Florida.Time
It was around 4 pm on Easter when my wife called me because she’s saw this bird of prey sitting on a wooden fence that divides our property from our neighbors. We first saw him on a rainy Good Friday, so I ran to my camera bag pull it out the camera which had its short lands already attached and proceeded to slowly open the mini-blinds and snapped a few pictures.Lighting
I was in such a hurry to snap pictures before he flew away that I really didn’t even notice the lighting. But thankfully, it was a clear spring Florida day in which I was able to capture this bird of prey.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon T3i with an 18-55mm f/3.5 lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
We had just received the news earlier that week that my wife’s mother had cancer and needed surgery and chemotherapy. We were depressed and didn’t really feel like celebrating, but then the hawk came on Good Friday, in the rain, and we took it as a sign from above that He was going to watch over and carry us through this time. Me, being a photographer, and seeing how this hawk brought comfort to my wife, decided to try to get a picture of the bird so she could have it with her. When the hawk came back that Easter afternoon, I feel the bird just sat there long enough for me to get this capture before it flew away. Since then, the hawk has continued to come by, even though my mother-in-law lost her battle over a year ago. The hawk still brings my wife peace when we see it.Editing
No, this is as I took it.In my camera bag
First, my bag is a huge AktivPak that carries all of my equipment. Inside the compartmentalized main section, I have my Cannon T3i with either my 18-55mm or 55-250mm lens attached to the camera. Inside this section, I also have my battery charger and two different lens hoods. In the pockets, I have lens wipes, a lens pen, SD cards, and a USB SD Card Reader. In the back zipper, I keep my laptop and charger for quick uploading and sharing.Feedback
I had taken pictures of blue jays and mockingbirds before, but taking pictures of birds of prey is on a different level. Whether in a building or outside, move slowly and don’t make any sudden movement or the bird of prey will fly away. Use your manual focus as this will provide you with sharp images of the bird, especially when they fly. Finally, when they fly, realize that they are fast! They are birds of prey for a reason.
