Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Most of my photos are taken while traveling.

Time

It was probably about 11 am by the time I took this. It was a four hour drive from northern Colorado where we were staying and a short hike up the side of a mountain.

Lighting

I really wanted to capture the background in this photo while also drawing the veiwer's eyes to the butterfly resting on the flowers.

Equipment

Nikon D3100 with 55-200 mm lens. That was it. I have since upgraded to a Pentax K-s2

Inspiration

I love showing people what I see, and through photography I can do that. I liked the color of the butterfly and the yellow background it sat on.

Editing

When I uploaded this image I didn't have much for editing software so the most I did was bring up the saturation and sharpness a tad.

In my camera bag

I started with the Nikon D3100 W/ 18-15 mm and 55-200. I now use a Pentax K-s2 with a 18-135 mm lens

Feedback

Patience is key to capturing wildlife in a landscape. Waiting for the right moment allows you to get your best shot. For me, I simply came across this butterfly while on a hike and I saw a great opportunity to capture some if nature's beauty.
