Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small town in Michigan called Holly. It is an abandoned train station.

Time

My family and I were in Michigan to see our new grandkids and spent the day "wandering". We came across a park around 3 in the afternoon and decided to explore. I came across the tracks and followed them about 1/4 of a mile and came upon the station. The angle of the tracks to the station just led my eye and I couldn't resist.

Lighting

I have to be honest, I wasn't planning on this picture turning out the way it did. The clouds, the time of day and being nervous about taking photos on train tracks, I just hurried. Got back home to Missouri and realize what I had captured.

Equipment

I have a Canon 60D, used my standard Canon 24-105 lens, was using my monopod just to add a little stability.

Inspiration

I have always loved train tracks and trains, but usually get the straight tracks leading nowhere. As I made the turn and saw the building, I new I had to take the picture, it just called to me.

Editing

As with everything I shoot, I shoot color and then change it in post if needed. This needed it. I added a little contrast to the clouds and softened the light on the close tracks. After converting to B/W I still wasn't happy, so I started down the road of changing tones. You can see where I landed.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon 60D, 3 lens, a 50mm the 24-105mm and a 70-200mm. I usually carry a flash in the car, just in case and lately have acquired a drone from some aerial stuff, and now never leave with it.

Feedback

As I am just a photographer wanna-be I don't have a lot of advice for others. But I guess if I had to, I would say, carry your camera everywhere, you never know what is around the next bend. Trust me, you be happier knowing you got that "one" shot, instead of sitting at home wishing you had taken your camera.
