My daughter plays Saxophone in high school jazz band, and we had a great time at the spring Jazz Cabaret yesterday. There are few things I enjoy more than live music! I did use the "Photos" program to crop a bit.

Behind The Lens

Location

Portage High School common area, in Portage, Wisconsin, USA. Jazz Band Cabaret

Time

I believe it was early afternoon. My daughter was in Jazz band, and was turning out to have real talent. They had a "cabaret", where the band played while the audience enjoyed a full meal and dancing, and was one of my favorite days of the year.

Lighting

Ugh. High school fluorescent lights! I was frustrated because I wasn't getting the shot I wanted because of that. After about a hundred shots, I tried B&W, and was much happier!

Equipment

I don't remember for certain, but I think I had switched to my Canon 80D, using a Tamron 16-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I have always loved both music and photography, and how they seem to work so well together. I've often played around with trying to get pictures that you "hear" when you see them, just as some songs can bring pictures to life.

Editing

I don't do a lot of post-processing, because computers and I argue a lot. But I may have cropped this one, I can't recall for certain.

In my camera bag

I still use a Canon 80D, with my old T3i for backup. My Pelican 1500 case also holds my Tamron 16-300, and two Canon primes, a 50mm and an 85mm. There's always a Leatherman and a knife, a phone charger, cleaning kit, and extra memory cards tucked away in there as well.

Feedback

Carry a camera! I am a paramedic, and my camera comes along even in the ambulance some days, just in case I'm stuck on a long scene. And when the light just won't play along, expirament with black and white. Lastly, live the moment as well. Don't get so lost in your art that you skip the good stuff. Thanks for looking!
