Behind The Lens
Location
Narail, a remote district in Bangladesh.Time
I just had received the 400mm f 4.5-5.6 prime lens and was very much excited to experience it's performance. So far I can remember that was my first formal outing for bird photography with that lens. I reached the location after travelling about 100 Km from my residence. I was expecting to photograph some new birds. Actually those were very early days of my bird photography. It was remote rural area. There were lot of paddy and jute fields on both sides of the road. I was using my own car. It was midday with rather harsh light for my adventure. I took a number of photographs of different birds. Finally I found the "Crow pheasant" in the jute field in a unique, adventurous & extra-ordinary pose. My camera clicked immediately and thus I captured " THE SHOT", probably one of the best in my life. It was 8 January 2012 at 12-45 PM.Lighting
Sunny midday, harsh vertical light, not very suitable for bird photography. But one thing we must remember that, birds never pose, you always cannot expect or wait favorable light or angle to shoot. And rarely we encounter a unique shot. So, I was using spot meter to compensate the adverse lighting condition. I always use to underexpose around one step by setting exposure compensation dial. We can see result was definitely rewarding.Equipment
Camera Canon 7D , lens EF 400mm f 4.5-5.6L prime. No tripod - supported on car's window glass instead. No flash used. Aperture priority at f 6.5 , Auto white balance, spot metering, at 1000 ISO, exposure time 1/400 sec. I used minus 0.7 step exposure compensation.Inspiration
Action- action- action. Birds are more beautiful when they are in action, probably most beautiful during flight. I was expecting something different with some activity. The shot is unique and self explanatory. We can get it rarely, only if lucky enough.Editing
As I told earlier, the shot was taken more than eight years back, unfortunately when I used to shoot only in JEPG. So substantial post processing was not feasible. Only minor enhancement and color correction was performed in adobe light-room.In my camera bag
I have lot of photography gears. So I cannot carry every thing when I go for a photo walk. In most time I use my car for the purpose, I can use more than one bag without trouble. For bird photography I like canon 7D mkII (in past mkI) and Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5- 5.6 L mkII as well as Tamron 150-600 mm newer version now a days. Occasionally canon EF 400mm 4.5-5.6 is used. I usually also carry a tripod with monopod option. But I like to stabilize my camera resting on cars window glass as I prefer to stay within car during bird photography. It allows me to go very close to the bird. In my gadget list there are canon 5D mkIII & IV, canon EF lenses like 11-24mm L (landscape), 24-70mm 2.8 mkII, 70-200mm 2.8 mkII, 28-300mm L (travelling), 50mm 1.2 & 1.8. Bag also contains canon's latest flash as well as flash extender, diffuser and lot of filters.Feedback
Get ready, keep yourself always prepared , know your gears with their power as well limitations. Now let us begin to search and try. Google as well many other sources may provide the information where we should go. A little knowledge of behavior of birds may help to shoot unique shots. Finally expect for some good-luck.
