Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in a remote village ( so far I remember village named Arugaon) of Kashmir, India during travelling. Basically I am a medical Doctor ( Cardiologist) from Bangladesh and an armature in the field of photography and rather self trained. Due to busy schedule of my profession I am left with a very short period of time for my hobby. So many of favorite shots are taken during travelling which I like very much.

Time

Kashmir is one of the most scenic places in the world and it is purely natural. It was my first time visit to this place and I had no preview about the facts of Aurgaon. So I was not prepared about what I shall get to see, what I should shot and which equipment should be ready. The place from where this nice shot was taken was a hilly area & remote one and difficult to reach at least for the persons like us (city dwellers). On 20th April 2016, the evening ( at around 4-40 PM) was cold but comfortable and actually I reached there by a very difficult horse riding .

Lighting

Depth of field was very important for me. From foreground to background we can see many subjects with extremely variable lighting conditions. Sky was very bright , Ice on the hilltops were even brighter. foreground was illuminated, but a residential area in between was significantly darker due to shed. Very much challenging situation. HDR could help. But I was riding a horse and of course no tripod. So I took the shot at 100 ISO and also intentionally under exposed for 2 stops to avoid over exposure of very bright zones and planed to correct during my routine post processing. Finally remember the light was totally natural and of course beyond of my control.

Equipment

Camera- Canon 5D mk III, Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-70 mm 1: 2.8 L mkII USM at 24mm f 9, Hand held, no Flash, only UV filter.

Inspiration

I was adventurous to enjoy a horse ride and travel to hilly zone with a group. The trek we took soon appeared very dangerous & scary to me, though one local guide was assisting and encouraging me. The trek was very irregular with different sized boulders, interrupted with small water streams and sometimes very steep. I was very much apprehensive that, I may fall down anytime. Almost whole of my attention was around the horse riding and around maintaining my balance, missing all the natural beauties around. At the end we reached the small plain area from where the photograph was taken. Finally, I got the opportunity to look around and simply was astonished as well as became spell bound finding ''THE HEAVEN ON THE EARTH'' . The jew drooping picturesque views were simply mind blowing. Transiently I decided only to see and enjoy & no photography. I was thinking that no camera can capture the actual spectacular beauty and lively atmosphere of the location. Ultimately I decided to try take some snapshots. Looking at the view (of the the shot discussed) I found a desired frame of landscape. The attractive sky, the distant high hilltops covered with reflective ice, nearer green hills , a shaded zone in between with some houses, all appeared to be dramatic to me. Finally I was looking for a for a foreground, the horse waiting for a ride served that purpose nicely. As I myself was on a horse riding , the extra height offered me an advantage to capture a better visualized foreground. Finally THE SHOT. But we must remember all this happened in a short period of time , so framing plan depends upon how instantly every calculation may be done by basic internal vision.

Editing

Yes I did post processing in Adobe Lightroom. Minor White Balance adjustment, brightness ,contrast and clarity enhancement was performed. The photograph was taken in a JAPG formet.

In my camera bag

It depends for what I am going. My favorite hobby is Bird photography, for that I use Canon 7D mkII, Canon EF 400mm 4.5-5.6, Canon 100-400mm L mkII, and Temron 150-600mm version II. For all other purposes I use Canon 5D mkIII & mkIV with Canon EF 50mm 1.2 L, Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8 L mkII, Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8 mkII, Canon EF28- 300mm L ,and Canon EF 11-24 mm L. Besides this Sometime I use some compact cameras including Sony RX 10 mark IV. I have many flahes and filters ( Polariser, UV, Graduated ND, ND etc) and tripods , Monopods etc, Usually my Camera bag weighs 12+ kgs.

Feedback

If possible visit once earlier, to plan the gadget to be used,to find out the best timing and select a view point. Underexpose one or two stop to avoid burnt out highlighted areas. Choose a higher position to get better view of foreground. Shoot raw when possible. Finally hope for the GOODLUCK.
