Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just outside of Darby in Southwestern Montana, the newly born fawn was hiding in the tall grass at a friends house.

Time

the picture was taken about 10 A.M.

Lighting

It was a bright but overcast day which made for no harsh shadows with plenty of light to get the shot.

Equipment

Panasonic DMC-F71 handheld

Inspiration

I have been shooting nature and wildlife since I was 13 that is 40 some years, I am always on the lookout for beautiful opportunities. On this particular morning I just so happened to be crossing a field and almost stepped on this cute little thing, but it did not move a muscle ! It amazes me how well these little guys only just born will instinctively freeze when danger is near, I could not pass up the opportunity;.

Editing

Not a lot, I don't think I even had to do any minor cropping on this shot, the baby deer was that close to me. I usually do run my photos through Photoshop to adjust the colors to how I think it appeared in real life.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Panasonic and my Canon Cameras with me some filters which I must admit I rarely use and a tripod, I like to travel light when I am hiking so I pick a camera, grab a tripod if I feel I am going to need one and start walking.

Feedback

Time in the field, the more you get out and look the more you will see ! For a young animal like this of course you want to be looking during birthing season white tail deer usually are born from mid June through mid July depending on the year. Be observant keep your eyes open and never pass up a good opportunity. Remember to move slowly, sometimes they will jump up and run away but I have had several over the years that never moved a muscle.
