Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an empty garage next to my apartment. I was experimenting with lighting and this photo emerged. It's one of my favorite images and I consider it my best work.

Time

This was taken on March 26, 2016 at 2:41 PM. It was a beautiful, sunny day and I was taking a walk a friend. It was a pretty spontaneous adventure and luckily, I brought my camera along to document everything.

Lighting

I wanted to create a dramatic, but minimalistic image. For this reason, I chose a really dark background and the way the sun was shining on the subject's face allowed for the look I was aiming for. I wanted her hair to be distinct as well and not get lost in the background so it took some trial and error before I finally got the desired effect.

Equipment

This was shot using a Canon T3i with an EF-S 55-250mm lens with f/4-5.6. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I wanted to take a portrait that told a story. I wanted the viewer to look at the photo and be affected by it.

Editing

There wasn't much post-processing involved with this picture. I just played around with shadows, contrast, and brightness to make her hair stand out from the background.

In my camera bag

Aside from my T3i, I just have my 55-250 mm lens. It's all I need to capture all the beauty around me.

Feedback

I'm an amateur photographer so I'm slowly starting to learn things myself. I used to hate taking pictures when it was very sunny out. But, I've learned that the sun can actually be your friend. So, my advice would be to step outside your comfort zone and try new things. It really helps you see things in a different light and shows you what you're capable of.
