Behind The Lens

Location

I was walking back from along the sand pumping jetty on the Gold Coast, as I walked around the corner of the kiosk my wife pointed out this Noisy Minor sitting in the tree beside the steps, didn't even think, raised the camera got two shots in, this one and one with an empty branch. I Guess he didn't like having a lens in his face.

Time

Was late afternoon, probably around 4 pm as I was with my wife we were waiting for sunset to take some photos, and then some of the lights of the Broadwater along the gold coast.

Lighting

The glow behind the bird is actually looking west towards the sun which has been diffused by trees in the background. I was shooting from a shadow from the kiosk and you can see a slight glow on the leaves from the sun. The shot as taken is all natural, and would be one of my favorites to date.

Equipment

The photo was shot with an Olympus omd em-5 Aperture: f/5.4, Shutter Speed: 1/250, Focal Length: 132/1, Lens is a kit lens, Olympus M.zuiko 40 - 150mm f/1.8 no flash.

Inspiration

I had just taken some photos of some seagulls and left the camera in the same setting, as we walked around the corner of the kiosk my wife tapped me on the shoulder and pointed to the bird, I just lifted the camera and rapidly took two photos, unfortunately the bird had flown before the second shot, I was so excited I didn't even see it fly away.

Editing

No post processing necessary as nature was really kind on this occasion supplying the subject and lighting I couldn't have been much luckier.

In my camera bag

If going Local I will take my small bag and have on the camera first my kit 40-150 mm its fool proof and great for shots of birds and the odd insect and flowers. My 60 mm prime Macro lens, and either the prime 45 mm or 14 - 42 mm lens. Recently added a 75-300 mm lens. When away for the day I take all lenses, tripod, Nd 8 filter, wireless remote control and interval timer. Flash is always fitted to the camera but rarely used.

Feedback

Be prepared for anything, When I know there are a few birds around, and they are continuously moving, I set the camera up in manual mode on continuous shooting 9 frames per second, or for sport if the scene is changing too much from light to dark. If you can have a partner with you that shares your passion, all the better. What I see, my wife sees from a different perspective, I can take a shot and move around but she can say hey try this and most times it works. Most of all take photos for pleasure and enjoyment, and be patient, I believe the more you get out of it the more you will improve and capture better photos.
