Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at our cottage on Pattee's Pond in Winslow, Maine.

Time

Sunset.

Lighting

The sky was a beautiful colored pallet and I used the sailboat to break into the scene.

Equipment

Hand held Canon 3Ti with a standard lens.

Inspiration

When you live on the water most evenings provide a beautiful "golden Hour". Once in a while the sky just explodes with beauty...that is when you take that special photo. You have seen it before and missed the shot because you were not ready. Having the equipment readily available increases the odds of capturing the same scene a second time around.

Editing

I used the standard contrast, color, and balance w/o photo shop or other post processing system.

In my camera bag

I now carry a light tripod, Canon 4Ti with a 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses. I have a 10 stop ND filter. As a walk about camera with no bag, I use a Canon bridge 60HS SX 65X. It is surprising how good the photos turn out with this inexpensive camera; especially, a full moon shot showing detail.

Feedback

I never leave home without one of my cameras that can be quickly retrieved. On a bike ride on the nature trail, it is ready for wild life, sunrise, sunset, etc. On planned photo shoots I take the bag after I have determined I have identified the best location for my desired shoot. I am willing to return more than once to get the photo most pleasing to me. My best advice is to be prepared for the best photo you can capture by knowing what you want to achieve. Blurred waterfalls, seascapes, birds in flight, night photos, or flowers all require a separate strategy. Finally, I study other photographer's work and note their camera settings.
