Location
Image created at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia, a quick drive from home to this spectacular setting. You can always get a great mix of activity and conditions here. No two days are ever the same. I love this location.Time
The sunrises this winter have been spectacular. I'm a total morning person so love getting the early shots, energy for the day! I try and get down to Burleigh about half an hour before the sunrise to catch the pre dawn light. I scramble around on the rocks in the dark looking for that perfect spot given the conditions of the day. I try and get as close to the water as possible whilst avoiding splash and often look quite the sight from a distance as I quickly lift the camera out of the way!Lighting
I love to capture that morning glow and feel of the day. It's different all the time so its rare that the camera settings are the same two days in a row. In this image it was important to get the rocks sharp, the water blurred and also catch the surfer paddling out enjoying the best time of the day!Equipment
My trusty Canon 5D Mark II with Sigma Art Series 35mm Prime Lens and Tripod. Love this camera, however not long after this image I smashed the back of it so now use a 6D until I can get the new 5D.Inspiration
I love the waves. The ocean environment is always changing, always different and always awesome. I created the Perfect Wave Gallery as the home for my images (www.perfectwavegalleryphotos.com; @perfectwavegallery) simple because I love capturing the ocean. Everyday I am inspired to get out there and draw in this awesomeness of the world around us. I love to capture it and share my images far and wide. I try and look at the world as though I am seeing it for the first time every time I take the camera out and hence always looking for and finding new perspectives.Editing
When I see the world, I always see it sharp and with vibrant colours so like to represent that in my images. I don't do alot of post processing, I just like to make sure that the image is clear, sharp and the colours really "pop". These days I use lightroom, I use "dehaze", "clarity", "vibrance" and a touch of "saturation".In my camera bag
I'm pretty simply I have one camera, 2 lens and a beaten up tripod. The camera was a canon 5D mark II and is now a 6D. I have a Canon 70 - 200mm IS USM L Series f2.8 lens - awesome - does everything and a Sigma Art Series 35mm f1.4 Prime lens - sensational, I love it. I challenge myself to create what I can using only these lens - it is becoming my style. i also keep a cut off sleeve of a plastic yellow rain jacket in my bag which I use to protect the camera from the splash of the salt water. I move alot when I take photos so like to travel like. I will pick a lens before I leave home and use that. If there are good waves around its the 70 - 200, if not its the 35mm!Feedback
Be you, enjoy it, have fun, practice, create your own style and learn from others, but most of all have fun, that should be what it is all about!
