I took this photo in my back garden, Victoria, BC, Canada. Victoria is the provincial capital of British Columbia. It is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Victoria is often called 'Lotusland' because of its temperate climate and normally does not experience the deep freezing winters like the rest of Canada. (Note: Vancouver Island is not Vancouver, the well-known big city on the mainland of British Columbia, often referred to as 'Hollywood North'.)Time
This is one of my favourite photos. I took it one spring (May) in the afternoon, not long after I had arrived home from work with my husband, so it was before 4 PM. The hummingbirds were all feeding as usual from the montbretias in our back yard.Lighting
Any natural light is best. It is my preferred lighting. I even love the play of light when it is filtered through leaves or tall plants as it is in this photo.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D300s and a AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:35-5.6G II ED lens. Handheld and no tripod nor monopod. Nothing else.Inspiration
I love nature! When I am not writing screenplays, hand sewing costumes or gathering props for films or theater, one will find me walking through the forests of Thetis Lake Park, Galloping Goose Trail, Francis King Park, or simply puttering around and relaxing in my small back yard garden, sometimes with a camera in hand. I love nature so much, it distresses me that we are losing our wildlife and forests to summer forest fires which have become horribly prevalent these past number of years.Editing
I know nothing about post-processing. What I see is what you get. Even a friend who is often the professional still photographer of my short films was shocked when he discovered that I do not enhance my photos. My husband, Stephen, had to back me up when I told him: "I don't have software for that. I don't have your Adobe Photoshop or whatever you call those things. I'm old-fashioned, and yes, I'm an amateur. I'm not saying don't like your post-processed and composite photos, Giuseppe. I do! I bought one of your lovely works, didn't I? I just prefer to work hard up-front the old-fashioned way. Okay? Capiche?" He and my husband chuckled at my friendly outburst.In my camera bag
Usually, I just bring my Nikon D300s and a AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:35-5.6G II ED lens. The reason why I usually use a zoom lens is because I respect nature and her creatures. I keep my distance. On the very rare occasions, I will bring a monopod or tripod with a Sigma 150-600mm 1:5-6.3 DG ? 95 as well and that is when my husband offers to carry the heavy loads. I am blessed to have a husband who loves and respects nature as I do, and who sometimes accompanies me on my walks or works with me in the garden.Feedback
The weather on Vancouver Island is fickle. One moment it is sunny, the next it is cloudy with strong winds, and the next it is pouring rain. Patience is key in any photography work. And yes, like the small wonders in my back yard garden it is a matter of taking advantage of the opportunity when the hummingbirds return every spring. We acknowledge and respect the Lekwungen peoples on whose traditional territory the university stands and the Songhees, Esquimalt and W?SÁNE? peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
