I took this photo of the gyrfalcon at the Pacific Northwest Raptors, outside of Duncan in the Cowichan Valley, BC, Canada. The Pacific Northwest Raptors is 100% dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey.Time
It was on our return trip from driving through the northern part of Vancouver Island, BC in June 2016. It was a lovely afternoon - not too cool, not too warm.Lighting
Sunny weather is not typical on the west coast of Canada, however it was that afternoon. Sun filtered nicely through the surrounding tall trees on the small open area.Equipment
I used my usual Nikon D300s with a AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm lens. That lens rarely comes off.Inspiration
My husband and I always wanted to Pacific Northwest Raptors center to see their work with these birds of prey. I am glad we took the time to visit it. Amazing work! I took many photos, however this zoom photo is one of my favourites.Editing
I do not have Photoshop because I don't believe in it. If a photo is manipulated or meshed together or composited, then it has become an art piece, not a photo. But that is just me. I have a couple of friends - one is a cousin - who like manipulating and compositing their photos. They are considered professional photographers. Not much. Usually just my rugged, trusty Nikon D300s with the AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm lens, raincoat, and a monopod or tripod. On the very rare occasions, I bring my massive Sigma 150-600mm 1:5-6:3 DG lens. A raincoat for my camera? Always. Vancouver Island is known for its unpredictable weather - wind, rain, fog, sometimes sunny.Feedback
Take the time to explore and visit the many beautiful, intriguing nooks and crannies, and special areas off the beaten the path. I love wildlife, flora, seascapes and landscapes. I may be in my 50's, yet I still enjoy looking at our wonderous world with the eyes of a child.
