Behind The Lens
Location
In the old town of Chieri, a town near Turin. I was there for my work and stayed there one night. As I suspected to find some nice views I brought my camera with me.Time
After eating dinner in a nice restaurant I went for a walk in the town centre, it was in March 2016 around 20:30. All the streets were deserted perfect for some nice shots. I dressed too light that evening so after getting cold I turned back to the hotel.Lighting
The sun had set and street lights were on. The light of the lanterns was well distributed and reflected form all sides. I did not have my tripod to do a long exposure. Luckily the lens has stabilization and holding it as steady as possible 1/15 sec at 3.5 resulted in a sharp shot.Equipment
I used my Nikon D750 with a Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC. Nothing else.Inspiration
Walking down the main street I looked into this alley. The lighting by the lanterns and the line in the center of the pavement drew my attention. Then I saw the low balcony without a door or window and then the grafiti on the wall. I could not walk on without a try to capture the view.Editing
I always use raw and do the post in Lightroom. The orange colour of the light and the loss of colour contrast due to the higher ISO (2500) made me choose for B&W. The highlights I set to -60 to compensate the lanterns and shadows +12 to bring up the light under the roof tops. Then increased the contrast to 40. To compensate the darker result (look at the histogram shifting to the left when increasing the contrast) I found the exposure up to +1.2 did the job.In my camera bag
I have my D750 attached to a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 VC or a Nikon 85mm 1.8d. Both lenses I found second hand on the internet. I prefer to walk around with just one lens. Depending on the time of day and light I sometimes carry also a Yongnuo 568 EX speedlight.Feedback
Going to a place that you are not familiar with always have some nice views. Having your camera with you means that you can capture the moment that you've just discovered. Shoot with the lowest ISO possible that allows you to find a shutter time that will result in a steady shot. I used the aperture priority mode for this shot. Try different angles and decide later what the best was so you'll learn for the next time where the best position will be.
