This row of ornamental trees lines the gated entryway of an estate home near Ernie's Grove, Washington. Although the home is not visible from the road, I can't resist stopping to admire this magnificent display every autumn and stick my lens through the gate to snap a photo or two.

I recently drove back to this location the first week in October. The trees have grown considerably but the leaves had turned a deep red on only half of them. The rest were still green. I'll try again in another week or two.

Thanks! I'm a big fan of bright colors and color contrast as design elements.

Behind The Lens
Location
As the Seattle suburbs thin out eastward towards the Cascade mountains, there's an occasional trophy home mixed in with smaller homes and dilapidated trailers. This driveway leads due east behind an imposing iron gate anchored by two stone pillars. I've never seen the gate open nor have I seen the home that lies at the end of the drive. Local legend has it that it was once owned by the actor Brad Pitt.Time
In spring and summer, the trees that line the drive are green and ordinary. But by late September, their leaves begin to change to the most intense scarlet and orange imaginable. I'd driven past them on fishing trips for several years before making a point of coming back one day to capture their stunning beauty. I took several dozen exposures from straight through the gate as well as from both sides. This was my favorite.Lighting
The day was mostly cloudy with only the occasional sun break as you can see by the soft shadows between the tree trunks at the right of the road. The filtered light was neutral without the usual blue cast from a sunny day which made the colors pop all the more.Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon 40D and the kit 18-55mm lens handheld braced against the bars of the gate for extra stability.Inspiration
I'm a big fan of strong, graphic images with pronounced patterns, contrast and color. Besides the obvious attraction of the stunning leaves, I love the nearly symmetrical way the trees and fence line up on each side of the road.Editing
The shot was recorded as a 10.1mp RAW file with only minimal post processing using Adobe Camera Raw for lens correction and color vibrance. Otherwise, the shot is almost exactly the way it came out of the camera. In my camera bag
These days I carry a Canon 5D MKIII and a number of zoom lenses and primes. Aside from shooting through a polarizer every now and then, I almost never use filters other than UV to protect my lenses.Feedback
Trust your eyes and your instincts. Look for color, pattern, contrast and symmetry. Very few things bother me more than horizons that are tilted to one side or the other.
