Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken along the Roaring Fork River near Carbondale, Colorado on a very cold January morning. This is about ten miles from where we live. My wife was driving to work one morning and noticed the scene and told me about it. The river gives off moisture every night, so much so that it covers the surrounding trees and bushes, which then freeze in the sub zero temperatures of January. However, the scene only lasts for maybe half an hour after sunrise when all the ice melts off and the scene disappears.

Time

The scene presents itself only immediately after sunrise. It might last for thirty to forty-five minutes at most.

Lighting

My best results occurred when I was shooting at a ninety degree angle to the sun. I tried various angles including straight on, but the low January sunlight was generally too harsh. Ninety degrees to the sun seemed to work best by far.

Equipment

Hand held. There was plenty of light and hand holding allows me to adjust quickly to changing light.

Inspiration

As I mentioned earlier, my wife turned me on to this scene. She has a good eye for what I am looking for.

Editing

I turned this image into a black-and-white using the NIK Collection (Silver Efex Pro2). I figured it would lend itself much better to B&W and I think that was a good choice. There are many other programs that can do this as well.

In my camera bag

I tend to travel very light. When I go out to shoot a particular scene or event I seldom carry more than one lens. Two at most. I'm not a collector of equipment and gadgets. Less is better as you don't have to think, just act. As Ray Bradbury once said about writing, "Don't think".

Feedback

Flowing rivers in extremely cold weather offer some interesting possibilities, but getting there early in the morning is the key.
