Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at McKeever Environmental Center in Sandy Lake, PA - I was an educator there for a year.

Time

This was at about 7PM

Lighting

We were in an auditorium so the lighting was a bit yellow, dim and dull - I had to pop the ISO up to 1600 in order to give it a fast enough shutter to catch expression, but low enough to give me some light. It worked out.

Equipment

I used a Canon Xsi with the 18-270 Tamon lens - I absolutely love this lens, I've had it for about 5 years now, and I've taken every single picture with it. It's all I need.

Inspiration

This is a Great Horned owl that is blind in his right eye - He was at the center with a group of disabled birds as a show for the students - There were also falcons and an eagle, but since owls are my favorite creatures on this earth (except my dog Holly) I hung around near him the whole time. I kept trying to get closer (since I feel like every owl should love me and be pet by me) but he kept giving me bad looks... I was lucky to have caught the one time he squawked (yelled) at me.... I backed up a bit after that. haha.

Editing

No processing - This is straight from my camera.

In my camera bag

Now a days I shoot with a 7D - I started on a Canon Xsi then moved to a Canon T2i and I've been shooting with my 7D for only a few months now. The only lens I use regularly is my Tamron 18-270 although I do own a Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 10-18 4.5 and the typical Canon 18-55 kit lens.

Feedback

Just keep shooting! I probably took 70 pictures of this guy, but there's always one that will stand out among the rest - The beauty of digital!
