Behind The Lens

Location

the winters in Moscow tend to last for several months and this winter was no exception. I had been looking for an item of furniture but didn't find it and walked through a Moscow park to get the bus home, traffic does not stop in Moscow when it snows, you just keep right on moving. It was the light on the snow that initially attracted me and the single person walking through added that touch of special. It was early evening and already dark, the snow in the foreground shows how deep it was, snow on snow always sounds amazing. the distance gives an impression of an endless journey always walking toward the light. It was a nice shot, it is a shot that an observer feels and hears. That is why I took it.

Time

I can still visualize the whole occasion of this photograph. We had come from the shopping center, crossed the busy road and walked through this tiny park, the pathway was well trodden and a new fall of snow sat on the already compacted snow, so the crunch was deep and hard beneath your feet.it was a busy evening 6 pm is when most people were heading home after a tough day. standing at the bus stop and looking back at the walkway from which I had emerged decided that it was an image worth preserving.

Lighting

the scene itself was important and the one woman walking into the distance gives it a story. the crunching snow the play of light as it bounces on the snow is significant, you can feel the cold, you can feel the acceptance, you can feel her feet taking each certain step. In Moscow, you get used to walking on snow that more often than not, it holds no fear. The lights from the street lamps create a mysterious feel and in Black and White, it has a timeless feel to it.

Equipment

I think at that time it was my Samsung S camera nothing exciting, I'm afraid.

Editing

I'm not a professional by any means. the photo was color but all I did was turn it into Black and White and enhance the image a little. I have no idea how to use photoshop or anything like that, so mostly it is a natural shot.

In my camera bag

I have a Canan now and of course my Samsung.

Feedback

I wish I could say all sorts of wonderful things but largely, for me at least it is, not quite point and shoot. I see an image in my mind I see it as a piece of art and then click, nothing more really. I want my photography to be like a painting and try to find something that could fit that bill.
