Location
I took this photo in the corner of our building where the natural light comes in from 2 sides as there are windows on each side of the corner.Time
It was in the morning. We hoped it would be easier to get them to sleep around morning nap time.Lighting
This was completely natural lightEquipment
I used a Nikon D800 and a 24-70 2.8 Nikon lens.Inspiration
I took this photo as these were 2 of my grandchildren from 2 different families born 6 days apart. So the little one was 3 days old while the larger baby was 9 days old. It took us 2 hours to get them to fall asleep at the same time. Once we did it was so very sweet.Editing
There is very little post processing here. I took a bit of redness out of the skin, then did a minimal smoothing. I wanted the names on them as the kids put great thought into their meaning. In my camera bag
I like to have 2 cameras just in case there is trouble I have a backup. 3 different lenses are good for baby shoots. The 85mm is great for the shallow image. the wide angle zoom for various distances, and the 60mm Macro for body parts like hands, feet, eyes, fingers, etc. My space doesn't accommodate a long lens. Having reflectors around helps remove shadows and put light where it is needed. My only difficulty with this set up is that I cannot shoot at night or after dark.Feedback
For baby shots I use a large donut pillow and cover it with a textured blanket. I use it on the floor as the most light from the windows was low. We did have heaters going to warm up the space. White noise helps to sooth the baby and help them to fall asleep. The key to getting them this comfortable is patience. It sometimes takes hours (4-5) to get the job done. The parents need to be advised ahead of time to manage expectations. Make sure they have everything they need for their comfort.
