Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my kitchen. My little granddaughter, Aislynn was being given a bath in our kitchen sink by my daughter.

Time

This was in the middle of the day. And since she was so small she fit in the sink nicely. it was more convenient at the time and all the sisters were able to watch her have fun.

Lighting

The light was on in the room as well as the backlight which came through the kitchen window. I used only the ISOs on my camera for the additional light.

Equipment

I have a Nikon D700 and with this shot used my 85mm prime lens which gives me the most light. My settings were 1/320, ISO800, F1.4 85mm. The lens gave this shot the clarity and bokeh which made little Aislynn stand out.

Inspiration

I am constantly taking pictures of the grandkids. It's what I do when I am babysitting. Candid moments are the best. At this age a posing studio shot is usually too hard to get. These candid shots are always the most powerful.

Editing

With the kitchen light I needed to remove the yellow overcast it brought. Lightroom is great for this. Beyond that there was very little post process here.

In my camera bag

I have both the Nikon D700 and the D800. I like having 2 cameras so that if there are any issues I have a backup. My lenses are the 85 prime, the 70-200 zoom, 24-70, 60mm macro, and my fisheye. The macro is great to use in tight spaces with the kids. When they are right in front of your face you can still get a focus. I like staying with the Nikon equipment and I am using all of these at different times.

Feedback

Be ready for the moment! Candids are caught not staged. So get those kids used to the camera. Keep clicking away until the perfect moment flashes right in front of your lens. These are the treasures worth framing. Print those moments and DON"T leave them in your camera or just on the computer. Hang them in your home.
