Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken by a lake about thirty minutes drive north from my fathers house on the French and Swiss border. We decided to go to the lake for a stroll and well we got lucky with the fog.

Time

We started our stroll at about 5 pm and it last for about 2 hours. This photo was taken until 5:50 pm, it was December 19, 2015. This was just before the sun started to set. My Father and I had spent most of the day inside so we wanted to go out before the sunset.

Lighting

So about the lighting or well lack of it. I'm a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series and my goal with this photo was to kinda emulate the scene where you see the boats come out of the fog. Now since it was too cold me to go and wade into the water i decided to show the reeds leading into water and have the rest of the lake disappear into oblivion.

Equipment

I was using one of my Nikon cameras. It is the Nikon D700 with a 24-120 F/3.5-5.6. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

There wasn't much Inspiration in taking this photo. Me and My father decided to take a stroll by the lake before the sunset and we brought our cameras along. I saw how the reeds fit perfectly into the rule of thirds and how this image remind me about a scene from Pirates and the Caribbean series, also what really got me was the water and fog of the lake blending together.

Editing

This Photo is one raw photo, so i didn't composite or add anything in. I edited this in Lightroom and what i did was bring down my exposure, added some contrast, took out some highlights and blacks, added shadows and whites, a little clarity bump, and some sharpening. I actually did not color correct in lightroom because i liked how it looked.

In my camera bag

Well first of all i have a ThinkTank Backpack. Normally i will have Nikon D7200 (still working on getting a full frame), Sigma 24-70 F2.8, Nikon 80-200 F2.8, Nikon 50 F1.8, extra batteries, charger, lens and senor cleaning kit, flashlights, Extra cards, Tripod.

Feedback

To get a similar shot you're going to need a lake between 2 mountains, Wish for fog, enough light getting though that fog, a Camera, and some reeds. There isn't really anything special about this photograph, i was just at the right place at the right time.
