Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard in Portland, OR. I am a self taught photographer of five years now. At the time this photo was taken I had recently acquired a macro lens and I was eager to see what I could produce with it.

Time

I had returned home in the afternoon from a day at school with a macro lens and I was very eager to try it out. I went into my yard with no tripod to see what I could do with this lens. I spent the next two hours wandering around my yard taking pictures of anything that captured my eye.

Lighting

Nothing amazing to share about the lighting. It was a spring day about mid afternoon so my biggest challenge was to make sure my shadow remained out of the frame.

Equipment

Canon 70D, Canon 100mm Macro.

Inspiration

I'd seen pictures of dead dandelions before and I saw one in front of me and I wanted to see if I could capture a cool picture. I got down on my hands and knees and spent fifteen minutes photography this weed.

Editing

Like all of my photos, I do a little post processing in Camera Raw in Adobe Photoshop. I did the same for this image, adjusting the temperature to bring out the blue and bumped up the contrast and added a little vibrance.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 70D, Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, MeFoto Globe Trotter and a polarizing and neutral density filter.

Feedback

If you have a macro lens, this image will not be terribly difficult to reproduce so look around for some dead dandelions and have some fun taking photos of the flower/seeds. If you do not have a macro lens, push any lens you have to focus as close as it can. A zoom lens will probably work better than a wide angle lens for this.
