Location
This photo was taken in Sedona, Arizona. I had never been to Sedona so I didn't know what to expect. It took about four hours to get there from where I live and it was totally worth it.Time
I was exhausted when I took this photo. It was early evening just before sunset and this was a last minute stop just before I was going to leave Sedona to drive back home. I'm still thrilled with location for that time of day. The sun hit the rock just beautifully.Lighting
I couldn't have asked for more than what I got as far as the lighting goes. The sun was setting and was glowing orange but still allowed for the texture and color of the rock to show through without creating any harsh shadows.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D3300, my 18-55mm lens and a tripod.Inspiration
The scene itself! I had not planned on making the stop that I did. It was a spur of the moment thing and when I hiked away from the car and saw the view, it took my breath away. I knew I wanted this shot to showcase the beauty of the rock, the reflection in the pool of water and have secluded feel. I waited for quite a while for some people to clear out so I could get the perfect shot.Editing
Yes, though my post-processing was very simple. I worked in Lightroom to make slight color adjustments, crop and add a vignette. I shoot clean, so it didn't take much time on the computer to get it where I wanted it.In my camera bag
I always have my 18-55mm lens, my telephoto lens and my light meter with me. I pride myself on my camera settings being very correct but sometimes I need help! Light can be so tricky, especially when you're dealing with shadows and direct light in the same shot.Feedback
Sedona is so beautiful, it would be hard not to take a gorgeous picture there. I think the key to this shot is the time of day and the time of year. It had rained hard a few days before I was there, allowing for the pool of water and the sunset created the warm feel on the rock. It was February so the trees were not leafy yet, though I want to go back to see what it would look like with the trees green.
