Location
Believe it or not, this photograph was taken right next to busy I10 in Tucson, AZ in a small pecan grove. Unfortunately, the pecan grove is no longer there; it was beautiful greenery in the middle of the desert.Time
The funny thing about that pecan grove was that it was awful in morning light! It was best photographed in the late afternoon so that's when we scheduled this sitting. I love when my clients ask me what time works best because I can pick the time to get the best lighting.Lighting
Lighting, of course, is almost everything in photography. The "perfect" time of day is different from location to location so I think the biggest thing any photographer can do is know their location and when the light is best.Equipment
I am a part-time photographer so my equipment is fairly minimalistic. I use a Nikon D3300 (Go Nikon!) with a standard Nikkor 18-55mm lens. I was laying on the ground on my belly so my arms were my tripod. Photography is so amazing because despite what you hear, you can take an absolutely amazing shot with equipment that doesn't cost thousands of dollars!Inspiration
Inspiration can be a funny thing. Sometimes it strikes when you're asking for it and sometimes it happens in the heat of the moment. This was a standard sibling sitting and I was working on individual shots. I love catching people in the moment and that's exactly what happened. She did her thing and I did mine.Editing
I am a full believer in shooting clean and doing it well so this has very minimal post-processing. The biggest thing I did was put it in black and white. In my camera bag
What don't I have is a better question! I have a backpack which always has at least an extra battery, an extra memory card and cleaning equipment. Depending on what I'm shooting that day, I'll also have 2 or more lenses with me along with my tripod. If it's going to be a long day, I may throw in the kitchen sink.Feedback
Yes! Be in the moment! Basic photography rules and standards are great when you're starting out but don't be afraid to throw the rule book out the window to get a great shot. I posed this girl just to have her hands folded in the grass with a cute smile on her face. She started giggling and put her hands on her face and I managed to capture it. It's always a matter of expecting the unexpected and capturing the person's true self, not just a perfectly posed subject.
