Location
This was taken from the side of the road in a relatively out of the way street in West Newbury Massachusetts. This little character became somewhat famous with local photographers for one winter.Time
This was just before 5 in the afternoon in late February.Lighting
As this was late in the day, especially in February in New England, the light was on it's way out. But I think it was pretty overcast that day, so despite it being a bit dark, the light we had was very even, and the subject was very still. So the couple of us that were out there were using longer exposures.Equipment
This was shot from a Tri-Pod with a Gimble Head and a Canon 7DMk II with a Canon EF 100-400 @ 400mm, Stabilization on, f7.1, ISO 100, 0.8s.Inspiration
I like Owls.Editing
I'm not particularly skilled with post processing, so almost all of my adjustments are global and done in lightroom. I tend to under expose in general, so I will pull the whole image up a little, down my highlights to taste and pull the shadows out to taste. Then I'll pull the black slider down a bit to punch it up. The light was pretty flat that day, so I probably added some saturation here to.In my camera bag
I carry WAY to much in my bag to list. But the bag generally stays in the car. I'll take what I need out and carry with me to shoot, and if I need something else I go back to the car.Feedback
Be patient. Nature photography is about patience and respect for the animals. Keep a good distance. If you spook the bird, it will fly and then you have no shot at a good photo. Also, be respectful of people's property. This shot was taken from the roadside because the tree was in someone's yard. There were better angles, but they would have involved going where we should not have been. Eventually, some people with no regard for people's property did go for those angles, and the home owner ended up cutting this tree down as a result of consistent trespassers.
