Behind The Lens

Location

I took it on an Island named Saint-Barthélemy. (Caribbean / Northern French West Indies) Saint Barthélemy, a volcanic island fully encircled by shallow reefs, has an area of 25 square kilometres (9.7 sq mi) Its capital is Gustavia. It is the only Caribbean island which was a Swedish colony for any significant length of time. The area Guadeloupe was under Swedish rule only briefly at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Now it is an overseas collectivity of France. Often abbreviated to St. Barths.

Time

It was at the end of January around midday.

Lighting

I had to think in black and white. The light was coming from the back. So the sky where the plane fits in was perfect - the plane in front of hilly the landscape would result in a very turbulent background.

Equipment

I took this photo with a Leica R4 from 1984 on a Ilford BW-Film.

Inspiration

It is so specatcular! The arrival descent is extremely steep over the hilltop traffic circle. Departing planes fly right over the heads of sunbathers and the cars on this roundabout. The airplane has to land on a very short runway. The arrival descent is extremely steep - the pilot has to fly very spectacular between two mountains over the hilltop traffic circle (where i was standing) to land in time because at the end is the sea. The History Channel programme "Most Extreme Airports" ranks Gustaf III airport as the 3rd most dangerous airport in the world :)

Editing

I´m not waiting with my camera on a tripod for the right time. I like spending my time on places without stress while the right moment for a shot is maybe coming. That´s for me the best time to experience.

In my camera bag

I always have enough Ilford Black&White Films in my bag because i love taking my vacation memorys on Film. It gives me more time to join the beauty of where i am and i don´t think that often about taking pictures from this and that. There are only 36 takes on one Film. So i only put my camera out when i know - "That´s the moment!"

Feedback

If i see something interesting i always pass by a second time. The first impression on a special place is important but the second time is for me more inspiring the occupy the place to spend time there and watching what´s happening. And then hopefully the right shot is coming - but always spontaneous. ENJOY YOUR TIME BEING WHERE YOU ARE!
