Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at the industrial place at the Zürisee in Switzerland.

Time

It was at the afternoon round about 14 o'clock

Lighting

What you see is a mix of natural light and flashlight. If I work outdoor I use my Hensel Porty 1200 and a ringflash on a separate stand. In this case the stand was my light assistant. The ring flash was held on the right site.

Equipment

I am a Canon shooter and I use the Canon EOS DX 1. The lens is my allround canon zoom lens the 28 - 300mm. The flash is a Hensel ringflash on a a long stick, held by my assistant. The Hensel Ringflash needs a Generator. This is a Hensel Porty 1200.

Inspiration

If I do Fashion I love to find a contrast. In this case the industrial surroundings and this amazing haute couture fashion outfit. An unusual combination you usually you do not see this way. This was my inspiration.

Editing

I always do a post processing and I do it by my own. I use the Adobe Bridge and the RAW Converter to set up the right contrasts and colors. In Adobe CC photoshop I do at first the skin retouching. I use the frequenzy seperation to make the skin clean, than dodge and burn to set the highlights and shadows. After that I use the detail extractor from the Google Efex Pro 4 filters to give some parts of the picture a deep sharp. A little bit skin toning and that's it.

In my camera bag

I use a photocase Peli 1510. 2 cams Canon EOS D5 Mark II and a Canon EOS DX 1. My Canon lenses are 28 -300 mm zoom, 24 - 70 mm zoom, 85 mm lens, 50 mm and a Sigma wide lens 12-24mm. Also a Speedlite 580EXII flash. And for some reasons I have a lightmeter from Gossen Digipro F and a Colorchecker x-rite.

Feedback

If you plan a fashion editorial shooting like this first thing you need to ensure you really know the place. I went there one week before, checking out the sun, the location and the possibilities. I took a few photos to check the light situation and what is coming into the lens. The next step is, you need a team, you can't do this by your own. I had a light assistant, a makeup artist and a stylist. The model has to change clothes outdoor, you need people to protect her. Once everything is in place do some test shoots without the model, to check the actual light situation.. If possible load the test pic to an Ipad.. to see it on a bigger screen. Check how the shadows fall, than you can position the model and the rest is posing and shooting and having fun..
