Coastal Maine is a highly varied landscape, but a few patterns emerge after crisscrossing the byways between Belfast and Castine for three days.

A prominent feature is the plethora of Goldenrod and Queen Anne's Lace flowers. Another pattern are the numerous deserted farm fields and the unoccupied large old homes, many in disrepair. The "visual reading" of these landscape patterns tells the beginnings of a story about Maine's rural coastal landscape, in which properties are being vacated leaving many fields unattended in the face of an unsupportive small farm local economy. However, many unproductive farms are not being sold for subdivisions, which leaves large tracts of open land to begin the ecological naturalization of successional plant growth.

This could be the story of this abandoned 19th century large white house, which sits on West Main St. in Stockton Springs, Maine. The house sits in a small sea of yellow Goldenrod and white Queen Anne's Lace.
