Behind The Lens

Location

Walking around the Balboa Zoo in San Diego, California with my family. My daughter had just began to walk so we stopped to look at the Koi and ducks. When I turn around, something catches my eye. I had to take the photos because I hadn't seen this many together at the zoo before!

Time

This is one of my favorite pictures because I can remember thinking to myself how I really wanted this picture to come out the way I saw it. I was new to the photography world and getting to know my camera. My daughter started walking around this time, and so I quickly captured a shot of her taking a step then turned and pointed the camera. It was about One o'clock I n the afternoon on a cool, sunny day. The weather was just perfect because it wasn't too hot nor was it too cold. To me it was perfect.

Lighting

The lighting for this shot was all natural. Since the day was sunny with a few clouds scattered about I did have the flash ready. I saw an opportunity when the sun shone through the clouds at just the right angle to get a soft but bright light for the photo without a flash.

Equipment

This was shot on a FinePix S6000fd camera with the original 10.7x optical Fujinon Zoom lens only.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photo came when I saw how the natural light made the water this gorgeous green, and the yellow stripe of the turtles to stand out beautifully. It took some time, because I had to wait for the right moment, but the waiting was worth it!!

Editing

There was no post processing done to this photo, which makes it one of my favorites for that reason.

In my camera bag

At the moment, I usually have my FinePix camera which takes 4 AA batteries. I carry a pack of batteries at all times no matter what. I also pack my Nikon Coolpix P500 camera as well a the memory chips needed for both cameras. The FinePix camera uses an Olympus XD picture chip card, and the Nikon uses an SD memory chip.

Feedback

Using natural lighting can be tricky when new to the photography world like I am. Through experience and advice I have learned that shooting outdoors on an overcast or cloudy day gives you that cool, soft light. Therefore, making sure you have the correct white balance for these conditions is very important. If your subject is shaded by foliage there will be a green tint, which can be corrected during post processing, if necessary. Waiting for the sun to peek through the clouds was the most crucial aspect of this photo- it illuminated the subject and created a better shot, eliminating the need for post processing. However, the best advise I was given and will pass on was to just keep shooting. The best part about digital photography is that you can take multiple shots, adjusting here and there to get the best shot.
