Behind The Lens

Location

I had finished climbing Mt. Fuji with a few friends, all of us completely underestimating how hard that would be, and I kind of wandered around the summit like a zombie when we finally reached it. Being the most exhausted I have ever felt in my entire life didn't stop me from taking photos as much as possible while at the summit, and this is one of the photos I took. I actually don't know this person; I just was taking photos of everything around me.

Time

I think this was taken in the late morning to early afternoon. We watched the sunrise just before actually reaching the summit. I was so exhausted I am surprised I figured out how to get down off the mountain, so I don't have an exact time for when this photo was taken.

Lighting

I liked how the sun was such that it made this person into a silhouette against the backdrop of smaller mountains down below. I just remember being on the summit and marveling at the mountain peaks surrounding the area that looked like models of mountains. The sun was really intense up there despite how cold it was.

Equipment

I had my little camera with me. Just a simple point-and-shoot camera. I had a friend who hauled up his tripod and a DSLR, but I realized there was absolutely no way I could've brought so much equipment up with me while hiking. I am not, as you may have guessed by now, a hiking person. This was just a moment where my friends suggested something I didn't think I'd ever get the chance to do otherwise. I brought my little camera with me, stuffed in the pocket of my coat while I hiked.

Inspiration

I think this was the first and will hopefully be the last time I hike up Mt. Fuji. As such, I wanted to make sure I got as many photos from the summit as I could. Looking back at the photos now I realize I really should've taken more, but at the time I was basically dead to this world and was only weakly taking photos whenever I felt severely compelled to do so. Otherwise I'm pretty sure I spent my time on the summit sitting there in a daze, wondering why teleportation was not yet invented. I liked seeing this person just politely strolling around the summit with their walking stick while against the backdrop of a glaring sun and tiny mountains below, so I took the photo.

Editing

The only thing I did was make it monochrome.

In my camera bag

I normally just have a Canon DSLR hanging around my neck. I used to carry tripods, but that's just too cumbersome for me nowadays. I take to balancing my cameras off of any stable surface I can find usually. I love the natural sun to serve as my source of lighting, and then it's just about finding great spots where the light and shadows naturally come together to make a great photo.

Feedback

Obviously they would have to climb Mt. Fuji, which I would not recommend unless they are in good physical condition. I had thought I was until I attempted it. Although, I have to say, I did see little kids climbing the mountain, so who knows? I think, more than that though, is being able to take photos even when you don't even feel like it anymore. It's become second-nature to me now to just have my camera with me and take photos instinctively. I think that reflex tends to serve me well.
