I took this photo on my visit to Doha,Qatar. This picture was taken from the opposite side of the City center near the Islamic Museum.Time
This picture was taken close to midnight, that way I was able to do a long exposure shot without having speed boats zooming by.Lighting
When taking this picture I thought of having the buildings light up the dark water below to make it look like colours are spilling into the water.Equipment
The camera I used was my Canon SX60 digital camera. I did not need to use a tripod luckily enough as there was a wall there for me to place the camera on top of. All I needed to do then was select the exposure timing and at what frame. After a few trial and errors, I managed to take a picture I was happy with.Inspiration
I remember seeing various other pictures of night time city lights and of light reflections. They were amazing to look at as it made night time photography truly inspiring for me. I happened to be walking by when I saw the reflection and thought that maybe I should try one of these styles.Editing
I did not need to do any post-processing for this picture. Since it was a long exposure shot, I did have to take a few shots before I was satisfied. I have edited most of the raw lighting it produced and tweaked the colours to make them stand out moreIn my camera bag
For most times when out traveling and taking pictures i stick to my Canon SX60 bridge camera. It is like an all in one camera and it is also small and very light to carry compared to my 7D that I also use. When I do use the 7D I usually use my Canon 15-85mm lens as it has a great wide angle range for landscapes and the medium zoom does most of what I need it to do. I rarely carry my full kit unless I am on a job, this would include my Canon 480exii flash gun, Canon 24-105mm L lens, Sigma EX DG 1:4 50mm lens, tripod and some spare batteries.Feedback
What I have learnt from night time photography is that a sufficient amount of light is needed depending on what style you want your final picture to look like. For example, if you wanted to take a picture a buildings with the lights on and didn't want all the exposure, it is best to lower the ISO level and the frame down till you get the right exposure. It is important to keep the lens on manual mode and turn the focus ring to the 'infinity' symbol. Having a tripod and a remote switch do help a lot as even the slightest of touches to the camera can make the picture go out of focus. The best advice I could give would be to give it a try till you get it right. Trial and error really pays off when you get the right shot :)
