Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at a very old bridge in Ball Ground, Georgia. Its called Pooles Mill Bridge. My parents are the two people in the picture. My daddy was a Baptist minister for 56 years, and one of the greatest men that ever walked the planet. He passed away in November 2015, and I miss him terribly. This picture has become my most favorite. He felt horrible that day but was such a trooper to let me photograph himself and my mother. My dad dearly loved photography, he always had a camera with him. About two months after I took this photo I was looking through some of his 35mm negatives from about 40 years ago. I found a black and white picture that he had taken when i was a child and it was almost the exact same picture. The composition was almost identical. I was blown away that he and i had taken almost the same picture 40 years apart. I would love to share that picture with you if you would like to see it.

Time

The time of day was late afternoon, I remember it took him a good part of the day to get up and going and feeling like he could make it. It was around 3pm, and little did I know that a thunderstorm was coming toward us. I shot pics and we had the best hour or so, laughing and joking, but it was cut short by the thunderstorm that ran us back to the car.

Lighting

The lighting inside the bridge is very dark. I shoot there quite often and have learned that no matter the time of day a flash is a must. It was bright and sunny to start the shoot bit grew increasingly darker as the storm i mention grew closer to us.

Equipment

I shot with a Nikon D3200 with a Nikon flash. It was one of the very first professional pics I took. I was trying to start my photography business and asked friends and family to let me practice with their shots and in return, they got free images, good or bad...ha...

Inspiration

When I was shooting this session, I walked down an old road bed, away from my parents to look for another location to shoot that might be manageable for daddy to walk. As I was walking back toward them, they both had sat on the broken pavement on the ground and were laughing and having a great time just being together. It was obvious at that point that it was the perfect picture of them. I was so excited that I shot and shot as I walked closer to them.

Editing

I simply enhanced the photos lighting by lightening it just a little, and I used a light, soft vinette.

In my camera bag

I now shoot with a Nikon D810, and a Nikon D7100. I have 2 flashes, I constantly carry Nikkor 35mm prime and 50mm prime lenses. I also have a Tamron wide angle and Nikkor zoom lenses.

Feedback

In my photography, I always look for the natural, non-posed shots. They tell the stories of who you are shooting. No fake smiles, no fake hand placements, just natural and simple. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story of this very special photograph with you. It truly captures my parents as the people they really are.
