Behind The Lens

Location

This is a sample of a Tallinn-series of pics (capital and largest city of Estonia). It was a clear snowy day, with lovely ambient light...

Time

Around the middle of the day... I have no detailed infos because ...it was a "run-and-shoot" strolling, the typical ...tourist-behaviour. I have to confess that, I was not then 'aware' about the existing portals (i.e. like Viewbug) related to promote-sell pics. Consequently, I had in mind to shoot many pics just for ...memories, not for further exploitation. So, this series of pics belongs to a not-properly structured photo-database

Lighting

The light was the proper for such a campaign (I mean ...from the touristic point of view, not the ....photographic point of view!). I had a tough time after the traveling, dedicated on post processing... I have added just an 'essence of HDR'. I do not like the blatant HDR-intervention most people use by default to any kind of picture...

Equipment

Just an 'easy-to-carry', point-and-shoot Canon Powershot G12. No tripod, nothing else... I love this kind of cameras when I am traveling, especially under difficult weather conditions... Easy, powerful, capable, compact, robust....

Inspiration

Living in a warm and full of sunshine country (Greece), is a fact that 'triggers off" my inspiration whenever I am in conditions not easily found in my place.... The cold, snowy context of a wonderful north-city (like Tallinn, Riga etc.) offers all the attractive drives to .....not stop shooting ! I greatly love the 'spirit' that pervades such old, historic, beautiful cities (usually found in the Central and North Europe)

Editing

Well, I give at least a 60% to the post processing and the rest to the shooting, whatever the shooting involves. I do like to "play" with many tools and variants, I really enjoy it more that the shooting-session. I will do this even if the original shot is ....perfect and there is no need for post-processing, editing etc.... It is an obsession of mine... Having as hardware several Macintosh models and iPhone/iPads, I mostly use PS and Snapseed in both the platforms...

In my camera bag

My default gear is Canon-oriented (Powershot G12, EOS-50D) and on the ....cheap side. The same stands for the lenses (Zoom 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Zoom EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, Prime 50/1.8). So far, I do not have any expensive lens (the 16-35mm belongs to a fiend of mine, I borrow it occasionally ...). No external flash, just an ancient (but always trusty) Velbon tripod (from my 'analog'-days, when I had the Canon AE-1, then the Canon A-1 and the F-1 cameras). Nowadays, in the digital and smartphone era, I found very useful the following iPhone apps: TPE (The Photographers Ephemeris), PhotoCaddy, Lens*Lab and Long Exp. I have them installed permanently on my iPhone....

Feedback

I believe in the good pre-planning. Before visiting a place, I collect some infos about it (landmarks, weather, history, etc...). Well, I do not mean that I study the whole case like a PhD-canditate.... but some representative infos is indispensable. I also read (again and again, yes...) some pages of the camera's-manual, if I am planning something 'different'. Since I am mainly street/city-oriented as a photographer, I usually prefer not to have company with me when I am under the shooting-verve. I run the whole place alone, I do not want interferences when I am thinking/shooting... A tragic choice if you have to inform your wife about such plans....
