Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on a walk with my friend in our neighborhood. It had just rained, and we stopped for a second to walk in the fresh puddles and take some pictures.

Time

This image was taken around 4:00 in the afternoon during a rainy and cold day in December. Despite December being known for its cold weather, the temperature was around forty degrees and perfect for going for a quick walk before the rain was to fall again. After stopping at this particular puddle for approximately ten minutes, the rain started to pick up, and the last glimpse of sun tucked back behind the clouds, creating a nice clear reflection against the ripple of the water.

Lighting

As the day was rather gloomy and transitioning between sun, clouds, and rain, the puddle was lit with light that reflected the day; gloomy but promising.

Equipment

This shot was captured with a Canon 7D Mark II and a Canon 50mm F/1.4 prime lens.

Inspiration

For a long time, I almost felt "stuck" with my photography. Maybe this was due to the fact that at the time I took the majority of my pictures as the same fixed focal length (50mm), so I searched the inevitable, Pinterest, for some creativity and inspiration. Although, I didn't specifically search for "pictures in the rain", I was inspired to venture off into a familiar environment and take some photographs from interesting angles and perspectives.

Editing

I wanted this photograph to have a bit of a colored film look, so I raised the shadows just a bit so the photograph would still have that mysterious tone from the strong contrast present in the image, and used the split toning element in Lightroom to give the image a nostalgic, film look. Finally, I felt that this image needed to be sharper, so I sharpened the image in Photoshop using the high pass filter.

In my camera bag

In the past, I would have recommend always carrying a 50mm prime lens with you on your photographic adventures due to its sharpness and ability to capture images from such a large aperture, but lately I have found the fixed focal length to be quite limiting. Today, I make sure to always have my 24-70mm F/2.8 lens with me as its great for portraits, landscapes, and everything in-between, and it's water resistant; perfect for days like this gloomy day in December. As for a tripod, I generally don't carry a regular sized tripod with me, but rather a flexible gorillapod, a great tool to have in spur of the moment photographs. For my body, I shoot with the Canon 7D Mark ii, a body I would strongly recommend to anyone in search of a new camera.

Feedback

At times, you may feel as if the place that feels most familiar to you has provided little new places and things to photograph. Instead of traveling for that perfect shot, work with what you have. Try venturing out into an area that you feel comfortable in and spend your time taking pictures from new angles and perspectives. You will find that there will be elements of this familiar location that you might have never noticed if you hadn't taken the time to bend down or carefully frame your shot, leading to a deeper appreciation of the beauty of your town, city, street, or the comforting familiarity of your house.
